Ohio Votes Down Issue 3

(Winter 2015) On Election Day Ohioans rejected Issue 3, a measure that would have made the use of marijuana legal for both medical and recreational purposes for residents aged 21 and older. Only 35% of voters supported the issue, which would have amended the state constitution and created 10 exclusive, growing sites, in effect creating a marijuana monopoly. If Issue 3 had passed, Ohio would have become the first state to simultaneously approve medicinal and recreational uses.

Issue 3 did not win a single county in the state. This may be evidence that legalization is not inevitable, because, as the old saying may predict, “As Ohio goes, so goes the nation.” (Read our discussion, “President’s Note: Is Marijuana Inevitable?”)
