Marijuana is an Election-Night Winner
(Winter 2016) On November 8th California, Nevada, Massachusetts, Arizona and Maine posed the question of recreational marijuana legalization to their residents. Voters in all but Arizona gave their respective initiative a nod of approval, allowing legal marijuana access to approximately 53 million additional U.S. citizens. To put this in an economic perspective, California’s legalization alone is estimated to expand the country’s existing $6 billion legal marijuana industry by three-fold.
Election night also saw voters in North Dakota, Arkansas and Florida say yes to medical marijuana, expanding legal access to another 24 million Americans. Meanwhile, those in Montana opted to reduce restrictions on its medical marijuana laws already in place.
Residents in Colorado, Washington State, Alaska, Oregon and the District of Columbia have already legalized personal cannabis use, and half of the states plus D.C. currently have medical marijuana laws in place. (Be sure to read About the … “State” of Marijuana.)
