CARA Widens Access to Opioid Addiction Treatment

(Spring 2018) Due to the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) passed in 2016, individuals living in low-socioeconomic areas will have more access to the opioid addiction treatment drug buprenorphine. CARA allows not only doctors but nurse practitioners and physician assistants to both prescribe and dispense the drug from their offices. The Act mandates that these assistants and practitioners receive 24 hours of training in order to write prescriptions for buprenorphine.
