Heroin New Go-To for Mexican Drug Cartels
(Summer 2018) The hand of economics is tipping the scale when it comes to Mexican cartels’ drug of choice. Since more states in the U.S. are legalizing marijuana, cartels south of our border are starting to concentrate on heroin. Small farming operations that had been growing marijuana bound for the United States are now instead raising more lucrative opium poppies for heroin production. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports that it is now intercepting less than half of the amount of marijuana it was stopping in 2012. However, confiscation of heroin and meth has skyrocketed.
