The Case for Routine Fentanyl Screening

(Winter 2017) Researchers at Wright State University found that over 90% of accidental overdose deaths in 24 Ohio counties during January and February 2017 were due to illegally-produced fentanyl or one of its analogues. Heroin, on the other hand, accounted for only 6% of these deaths. Over half of the victims were between the ages of 25 and 44.

The study’s lead researcher notes that this data underscores the importance of testing for fentanyl and fentanyl derivatives as part of the routine drug screenings used by treatment facilities, physicians and the penal system.
