Cures Act Offers Help for Addiction, Mental Health

(Spring 2017) In the waning days of President Obama’s administration, Republicans and Democrats joined together to pass the 21st Century Cures Act. The legislation provides $1 billion spread over two years to bolster grant programs already in place for addiction prevention and treatment, prescription drug monitoring databases and workforce development. Also included within the bill is the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, which was passed after the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012.

Other issues addressed in the Cures legislation include opioid addiction, mental health (including eating disorders), criminal justice, medical research and underage drinking.
