Many Physicians Shying Away from Opioid Rx

(Spring 2017) New survey statistics reveal that the majority of American doctors are curbing the number of opioid prescriptions they issue, and close to 10% have completely halted writing prescriptions for opioid-based drugs. However, over 30% of physicians reported that cutting back on opioid prescriptions has negatively impacted patients dealing with ongoing pain issues.

Doctors cited both risks and red tape associated with writing opioid prescriptions as the major reason for the reduction as well as a more thorough understanding of the painkillers’ potential adverse consequences.
