NY County Goes After Big Pharma

(Winter 2016) Suffolk County, New York is bringing suit against 11 pharmaceutical manufacturers, including Purdue Pharma and Johnson & Johnson, charging that these companies drove the country’s now-widespread opioid crisis. The plaintiffs say that Purdue and the other companies did not properly warn both patients and doctors of the addictive nature of OxyContin.

Suffolk County is asking for reimbursement of funds it spent on recovery and rehabilitation of its opioid-addicted residents. Without admitting any guilt for its actions, Purdue Pharma settled a suit with the State of Kentucky for similar damages to the tune of $24 million in 2015.
